Meet Peter Martynowych

I employ a psychodynamic, developmental, and family systems approach to increase my clients’ capacity to be resilient, develop satisfying relationships, problem-solve, and take effective actions that improve the quality of their lives. This work engages both cognitive structures and affective components, and views a person’s internal conflict as a source of opportunity for growth and development. It also recognizes the importance of one’s work, family, and community life as an important part of their healing and growth. This overall approach includes active skill development that enables the client to negotiate a new contract with themselves and their external world.
In my private practice, I bring in-depth experience working with adults, men, couples, families, children, young people and young adults, couples, and groups, addressing trauma and addiction, facilitating men’s and bereavement groups. I also have experience in a wide variety of mental heath settings. These include Therapeutic Get Set Centers (counseling with children who suffered trauma), Community Mental Health Centers, Group Clinics. As a Child Development Specialist, I oversaw technicians, ran parents groups, and provided individual counseling. While at Harvard, I established and ran peer counseling groups, while conducting research, for at-risk junior high and high school students who were primarily gang members. I served as a faculty member at Harvard, Antioch, LIOS, Seattle University, and University of San Diego.
There are two more aspects of my life’s work that I deeply value:
1 Working in a collegial environment with other clinicians who offer different approaches and expertise, collaborating and consulting to one another in an effort to provide excellent and comprehensive care to a wide variety of clients and populations.
2 Having grown up in an immigrant family and neighborhood, I bring an unique understanding in working with people from many different backgrounds.
